Shopping online vs. The Mall

A couple of months ago, before DSF started, I was looking for a new wallet to buy and spotted the then new Tory Burch Robinson collection. I then fell in love with the purple wallet. I've never bought a designer wallet before, and I wanted this one to be my first. The story of behind the purchase, however, got me thinking about future designer purchases. More after the jump.

I first saw the wallet at Harvey Nichols when I went to check out the part sale. This was a new collection, so obviously there was no discount. I started mulling over whether I should get it or not, and then I decided to wait until DSF in the hopes that they might go on sale too (wishful thinking hehe).

Two weeks later, on the first day of DSF, I rushed to Harvey Nichols after work to see if it's gone on sale. It wasn't (sniff!). I decided I'd buy it later that week because I just loved the colour and style- it was different.

So on a shopping trip that weekend to The Dubai Mall with Neelofer and Ekta (of Dollz in Dubai), I dragged them to Bloomingdale's to show them the wallet I was about to buy. But alas, it was out of stock in that colour and model! As expected, now that it was nowhere to be found I realised that I must have it! My friend was at Harvey Nics that evening and told me the wallet was available there, but when I went the next day it was out of stock! I then called the Tory Burch store at The Dubai Mall to ask if it was available, and it was out of stock there as well.

Ekta suggested I order it online, which worked out better than anticipated. I decided to go through a trusted online store and ordered it from Bloomingdales.com, who now ship directly to the UAE. IT was going to take two weeks to arrive, but after paying for shipping and customs, I still managed to save 60dhs on the wallet.

This lead me to thinking about whether I should be doing more of my shopping online through global retailers (and make proper use of my Shop & Ship account). I've always known that things here are at a higher price point than abroad, but if I'm paying for shipping and customer and still saving money for the same item, then it's worth the 2-week wait, no? What do you think Neelofer?
